The Honeymoon begins

Three weeks after our marriage we started our honeymoon travel by first going to Bogotá so Veronica could apply for the Costa Rican visa.  The embassy requires her to provide 13 things, which is the most I have seen anywhere and they only give her 30 days while most other citizens can stay 90 days.  They (embassy) didn't like that I didn't book accommodation for 30 days so I just faked the original request to 30 days as its ridiculous to expect tourist to stay in one location 30 days.  Anyway at the end of the day, we returned and she received the visa.  Yay!  Costa Rica here we come soon. :)
Veronica's Mom and aunt accompanied us to the bus terminal
The gypsy life begins.....:)

We also ate at an Indian restaurant while we were waiting for the visa.  It was Veronica's first time and I was sad that the food was not good.  It tasted like it had to much salt but I think it was a lot of black pepper.  We'll have to try again in another place.

While in Bogotá we took the tram up Mt. Monserrati where we could see just how big Bogotá really is.  I think there is over 11 million people.  We were all to happy to leave as we both don't feel comfortable in cities.

The First Miracle in Our Marriage

I mentioned in the last post I had trouble registering our marriage with the Notaría's.  Here's the long story.  Be prepared to hear about my frustrations....haha!

Before I came back to Colombia I didn't do any research on the requirements needed for marriage as I figured it would be simple.  How wrong was I.  This was discovered shortly after I returned when we started talking to the Notaría's about the process of registering a marriage.  For locals, one only needs a birth certificate and cedula (ID card).  For foreigners, one needs a certified copy of the birth certificate that is apostille (Before I didn't know what that was, but its a recognized International format for legal documents), passport copy, and proof of being unmarried.  I had copy of my birth certificate with me, but its not a certified copy and neither is it apostille.  Both of which has to be obtained in India. (The Indian embassy in Colombia can certify documents but not apostille them.)  I was a bit doubtful I could even obtain that.  I was a bit frustrated as the Notaría's are very strict on having the birth certificate.  I couldn't understand why they couldn't just accept my passport as its a legal document which shows my information.  Grrr...

So I talked to my sister Mish in N. Carolina and asked her if she had any friends in Pune India that could help with getting my birth certificate in time for a Feb. 28 wedding.  I wrote her about a month before the wedding.  She put me in touch with her good friend Mary who then put me in touch with her brother JD who had more time to work on helping me than Mary.  JD and I started communicating through WhatsApp.  He had to make an appointment with Pune Municipal Corporation as they are the birth register for me.  They gave him 3 certified copies of the certificate.  I was quite surprised and happy that the process had moved along this quickly.  It was the 9th of Feb. so there was hope we might get the certificate before the 28th.  Shortly after getting the certificates and while JD was researching how to get the apostille, he had a family emergency that called him away to another part of India.  So he turned over the paperwork to Sri who is a family friend and a lawyer.  Note during all this process, I was trying to maintain communication with them so I could help move things along.  This required me staying up after midnight because the time difference with India.  I have to say I had some tired days in there.  Sri needed a copy of my passport so I sent that to her.  Then she had to wait for a hearing on it.  She said to pray a lot, because it usually takes a while as the apostille is handled by the government.  If one is the son of a politician, then things get done quickly.

A week before the wedding, we decided to push the wedding back 2 more weeks to March 13th.  We still hadn't sent out wedding invitations although it was mostly her family.  Unfortunately 2 of Veronica's close friends had booked airfare for the 28th date and so it was frustrating that we could not have it then.  Only one of them was able to come for the wedding on the 13th.  During this waiting time Veronica explored the possibility of marrying and registering later.  The Adventist pastor she talked to said the pastors were not allowed by the conference to perform marriages unless all the legal paperwork was in order.  This really fired me off, as marriage is an institution from God and not the state.  Why did the church have to behave this way.  Veronica's aunt Julieta told us to talk to her pastor, Varon.  We went to his office and he said he would give us the paperwork to get married even though he wasn't performing the marriage.  We had asked pastor Oscar who was the chaplain at the Colegio Veronica had worked at and whom I got to know a little.

Sri reported that she would have the apostille birth certificate 10 days before the marriage.  I asked her to send one of the copies of the birth certificate so I could maybe use it to negotiate with the Notaría.  It costs about $50 to send a document by DHL from India to Colombia in 5 days.  Not cheap but I was hoping it would help having something to show the Notaría.  Pastor Varon is registered at one of them and said we could go talk to them.  Before we went there he looked at my birth certificate and said there was a problem as my name shown is my first and second name.  No last name and the parents name ends in Khan.  I explained that I was adopted.  He said the Notaría would not accept my paperwork as the name does not match my name now and I don't have paperwork to show the trail of name changes. (My adoption paperwork shows my last name as my Mom's maiden name.  She later married when I was 18 months old.)  We walked over to the Notaría and talked to the lady that handles matrimony.  She looked at my birth certificate and my passport copy and the pastor explained why the names didn't match.  She said the same thing as the pastor, that I must show evidence of name change.  Double frustration as there is no paperwork that I possess for that.  I was thinking why does Colombia have to be so complicated. :(

Anyway, we had our marriage and then signed the church marriage document.  Two weeks later we visited the pastor to attempt one more visit to the Notaría as we are married and also I had my birth certificate with the apostille on it.  The pastor still said they are going to give you trouble on your name, but lets go visit them.  So we walked across the street and visited the same woman as before.  The pastor gave her my paperwork and was explaining again about the name.  She looked at the church document that showed  we are married and said promptly, "oh you're already married."  She then proceeded to take my passport copy and Veronica's cedula copy and start the process for registration.  Wow!  I was amazed and so was the pastor.  He said he's never seen them do that before.  We all said a big thanks to God for providing this miracle as I was almost resigned to the fact we would have to register in another country or make a fake wedding certificate. haha!

Marrying in Colombia

First off I have to apologize for taking a huge hiatus on this blog.  I went back to the US in November and returned to Colombia right before New Years.  I helped Veronica plan the wedding which originally was going to be Feb. 28, but because the Notaría require a certified copy of my birth certificate and for it to be apostille, we had to push the wedding date to March 13th.  Many thanks to my sister Mish and her friends in India for helping me get the birth certificate.  More to come on the birth certificate in the next post.

My Mom flew all the way down to Colombia for the wedding.  I was quite proud of her as she's 82 years old and doesn't speak any Spanish.  My sister Carol was going to come, but her husband broke his foot badly a week before and so she wasn't able to come.  I wished that all my family and friends could have been here, but at least I can share the pics.

Amor in Colombia :)

Forgive me everyone for not keeping up with the blog.  Let me explain why....haha!  As you can see from my title, it involves love. ;)  Before leaving on my world trip I had joked with some of you about meeting a beautiful woman in Colombia.  However I was not looking for love when I arrived in this country.  But I believe God had other plans for me on the 26th of July when I met a wonderful woman named Veronica.  Thanks to Salome & Luis for inviting me to go to the river with them that day.  Veronica's smile was captivating and her personality is very outgoing.  I instantly felt a connection with her and knew that I wanted to know her more.
The winning smile :)
I was invited to stay at her place as I was staying in a hostel in Cali.  I decided one night would be ok.  Veronica laughed at me and said, "no, stay more time".  Well I did stay more time, a lot more time. haha!  I thought maybe up to a week would be fine, but God had other plans for me.  I was climbing a tree with no limbs and I saw a beautiful face below me and lost all concentration.  I fell from the tree and sprained my right ankle bad enough to stay 3 weeks longer.  Looking back on that, it was definitely a blessing as it gave us more time to get to know each other better.
My beautiful nurse :)
At the end of August I traveled up north to know the coffee region and the Caribbean coast.  Before leaving I told her I would return to Cali if we still had an interest in each other.  We stayed in contact the whole time I was gone.  I went to Medellin to hear her sing with her group Sublime and then returned with her to Cali.

I am so blessed to have someone that sings so well.  I'm only now beginning to realize how much singing she has done all her life.  Veronica is well known in the Adventist churches here in Colombia.  Here's a link to Sublime's Youtube channel:  https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCIv2sNYJuYvYvPBWL6IuirQ

After 2 months of getting to know each other, there was no doubt that I wanted to continue our relationship.  So I officially asked her to be my girlfriend September 25th with a custom card written in Spanish. (Thanks to her aunt Julieta for helping me edit my terrible Spanish. haha!)

We have continued to get to know each other, and every day I feel more sure that she is right for me.  She has said things that I feel the same way about, for example...she likes to travel and doesn't like living in an area more than 2 years.  She likes living in the country and enjoys exercising.  She plays the best game of ping pong of any girl I've played against.  I can go on with the list, but I prefer for my friends to meet her to see how compatible we are.

Now we're working on her visa to the US.  It requires an interview in Bogotá.  Its been her dream to enjoy a Christmas in the US.  Please keep this in your prayers.

And so I leave us in God's hands and He will direct our paths.  I couldn't have asked God for a better woman to be in my life. :)  I hope you all will get to meet her soon.

La Costa

Sep. 2 - 11

La Costa is the northern coast of Colombia, where the Caribbean ocean kisses the land and its always hot.  Its a very beautiful area with beautiful beaches.  Also the most northern point of land in South America which I wanted to stand on is there.  This would complete my traverse lengthwise of this big continent.

The city of Cartagena was a place I visited to walk its colonial streets in the old town section.  It is very romantic with horse drawn carriages.  Alas, I'm by myself and so I have no one special to share the place with.  However I tried to capture some of the ambiance to share with all of you.

Parque Tayrona has the most beautiful beaches and water I have seen here in Colombia.  Its one of the top vacation places that Colombians visit.

Punta Gallinas is the most northern point in the country and is surrounded by desert and sea.  Interestingly it has sand dunes and flamingos and of course beautiful sunsets.
