Valparaíso

Date: March 25 - 26

We had heard many things from other travelers about Valparaíso. How colorful the street art is on the buildings and how robberies were not uncommon even in the daylight. We decided that we needed to go see for ourselves. We arrived by bus from Santiago and took a city bus to the bottom of Cerro Concepción. Then we took a very steep tram up the small hill to where there is lots of hostels. The tram which they call “ascensor” was really cool because it was old and bordered on a little danger. haha! It was wooden enclosed box car that goes up a 70 degree slope on a cable.

We found a hostel quickly and after a briefing by the hostel gal on safe areas to walk (stay away from the valleys), we were off for some art on buildings. There is a lot of art on all the walls. It really sets this city apart from others. If it didn’t have that, I think it would just be a stinky dirty city like Ushuaia. There was a bit of dog poo everywhere and it did smell of urine. However I would recommend that everyone go there and see for themselves.
